John Rocha at Waterford

Since 1783, Waterford Crystal has left its mark throughout each age with a reputation for producing beautiful and treasured creations. Waterford’s two guiding credos, handed down from its founding fathers, have been creative craftsmanship and the relentless pursuit for excellence. That legacy finds renewed expression in John Rocha at Waterford Crystal.

Born in Hong Kong of Chinese and Portuguese descent, John Rocha moved to London in the 1970's to study fashion. Using Irish Linen in his graduate collection, he was inspired to visit Ireland; eventually moving to Dublin in the 1980’s where he has lived for over twenty years. Over this time, John has developed and refined his own distinctive style, constantly experimenting with new fabrics and techniques.

He was awarded the prestigious title of British Designer of the Year in 1994 and, for his long-standing contribution to the fashion industry; he was further awarded with The Commander of the British Empire (CBE) in The Queen’s New Year’s Honours list in 2002.

In 1997, John Rocha formed an exciting collaboration with Waterford Crystal – his first work in another medium – and brought renewed expression to this world famous brand. Designed to enhance your home, the John Rocha stemware and giftware collections combine clean, modern style with the artistry and skill of Waterford’s craftspeople.

John Rocha’s hallmark for originality, simplicity and minimal lines are evident in his crystal collections for Waterford Crystal that are made to be used and enjoyed.

The challenge of combining the purest of crystal with modern colour had long been a fascination for John Rocha so in 2006, he launched the very striking “Black Cut” collection – signaling a return of opulence and elegance. The dramatic Black Cut giftware collection radiates mystery with its high gloss black surface.

The newest collections for Rocha take the current design sensibility for opulence and crafted detail into the home, with designs that are as beautiful as they are functional. The stunning Lume and Voya collections are light and feminine in form and sensory to the touch – perfectly capturing the inherent purity and brilliance of Waterford Crystal.

Voya’s pattern is a simple classic ribbon of karo cuts framed by rings above and below. Lume sparkles with a refined brilliance with a densely encrusted band of tiny diamond cuts, creating a textural surface with a modern lighter shape.

What immediately emerges is a collection at once in tune with today’s lifestyle that will, as with all classics, endure well into tomorrow.

“It’s the innate nature of things and how they interact that naturally interests me. Whatever material you work in, be it fabric or crystal, the shape of what you create is defined by light and shadow. With Waterford, you not only design with the purest crystal, you also work with light. This for me has been one of the most exciting aspects of my collaboration with Waterford’s craftsmen”. - John Rocha
